In the Automotive Sector Deal the Government pledged £16m (subject to business case) for an industry led national supplier competitiveness and productivity improvement programme. It was intended that this improvement activity would be delivered by the NMCL Automotive Programme and led by SMMT.
The programme utilised the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Levels (NMCL) system to:
- Improve competitiveness
- Raise workforce capacity
- Grow Productivity
- Boost economic growth
- Increase exports
The NMCL system included a capability and competitiveness assessments and was supported by quality controlled improvement providers. Support to companies in the automotive supply chain included training, coaching, mentoring and consultancy.
In order to be part of the NMCL Automotive programme a company needed to manufacture one or more of the following products:
- Cars
- Commercial vehicles, buses and coaches
- Trailers and semi-trailers
- Battery electric vehicles
- Off highway vehicles, agricultural, industrial and road tractors
- Motorised and trailer caravans
- Motorbikes
OR, components, accessories or software used in the vehicles above
OR production equipment designed to enable the manufacture of automotive products
