The UK produces 1.7 million vehicles per year. Every 20 seconds a car, van, bus or truck rolls off a UK production line. Over 80% of these are exported to more than 100 countries.
The automotive industry is a vital part of the UK economy accounting for more than £71.6 billion turnover and £18.9 billion value added.
With some 169,000 people employed directly in manufacturing and in excess of 814,000 across the wider automotive industry, it accounts for 12% of total UK export of goods and invests £4 billion each year in automotive R&D.
More than 30 manufacturers build in excess of 70 models of vehicle in the UK supported by more than 2,000 component providers and some of the world’s most skilled engineers.

Established in 2009 to enhance dialogue and strengthen co-operation between UK government and the automotive sector. The Council is made up of senior figures from across industry and government and meets three times per year.
In July 2013, the Automotive Council published the sector strategy: Driving Success – a strategy for growth and sustainability in the UK automotive sector. This long term strategy sets out a range of actions to addresses the cross-cutting objectives of improving access to finance, support for emerging and disruptive technologies, skills development, and improving the competitiveness of the UK supply chain.

Aerospace Growth Partnership
The Aerospace Growth Partnership, also known as The AGP, is a strategic partnership between government and industry which has been established to secure the future of the UK aerospace industry for the next 20 years and beyond.
The AGP has not only led to a step change in the relationship between Government and industry, it has also encouraged UK companies to co-operate more closely in addressing problems that affect the sector as a whole.
The AGP was established in 2010 as a vehicle to tackle barriers to growth, boost exports and grow the number of high value jobs in the UK. To do this the AGP is identifying the market failures that form barriers to growth and is developing initiatives to address these specific challenges.
